With separable phrasal verbs, a noun can go before or after the particle: ‘I never throw my old photos away.’ ‘I never throw away my old photos.’
However, an object pronoun such as me, you, him, her, it, us or them must go between the verb and the particle: ‘throw them away’, ‘pick him up’.
Not all phrasal verbs can be separated. For example, we say ‘look after the children’ and ‘look after them’.
