The Dictionary of students’ common mistakes is a practical reference for learners of English and their teachers. We collect frequent errors from students’ written work and explain them through real examples, corrected sentences and concise guidance.
Using the dictionary with students
Teachers can share links to individual entries with their students or add them directly to comments in a composition. This gives students a clear explanation and relevant examples at the point where they need them.
The dictionary can also support guided self-correction. Instead of providing the correct form, teachers can mark the mistake and ask students to look it up and revise the sentence themselves. This encourages students to notice recurring patterns, reflect on the language and take a more active role in improving their writing.
Using the dictionary independently
Students can also use the dictionary independently whenever they are unsure about a word, expression or grammar point. They can compare the incorrect and correct examples, read the explanation and then return to their own writing to make the necessary changes.
Looking up mistakes in this way can help students recognise recurring patterns, understand why something is incorrect and avoid making the same mistake again.
Suggest a common mistake
We continue to expand the dictionary as new recurring errors appear in students’ work. If you are a teacher and would like us to add a common mistake that is not yet covered, email us at [email protected].
