We use prepositions before nouns, not not before adverbs (here, there, somewhere, outside, inside, abroad, near, far, etc.) We say things like: ‘travel abroad’, ‘stay outside’, ‘come here’, ‘stay outside’, etc. (WITHOUT preposition).

× When I arrive home, I sit comfortable on the sofa.
√ When I arrive home, I sit comfortably on the sofa.

We use adjectives before nouns or after the verb be to describe nouns.

We use adverbs after verbs to describe actions, to say how we do something. Compare:

• They lived very happily. (How did they live? We are describing the verb/action)
• They had happy lives. (What were their lives like? We are describing the noun)
