something

I couldn’t do something to solve the problem.
I couldn’t do anything to solve the problem.
I could do nothing to solve the problem.

In negative sentences, we normally use anything, not something: ‘I couldn’t find anything.’

We can express the same meaning with nothing and an affirmative verb: ‘I found nothing.’
