The city was very wonderful.
The city was really wonderful.
The city was absolutely wonderful.

Wonderful already means ‘extremely good’, so we do not normally put very before it. Use really or absolutely: ‘really wonderful’, ‘absolutely wonderful’.

The same pattern applies to other strong adjectives such as amazing and terrible: ‘absolutely amazing’, ‘really terrible’.
