Although joins two parts of the same sentence. Do not put a comma immediately after it. Use however or the more formal nevertheless to connect two separate sentences. Compare:

• Although the food was horrible, we ate everything because we were hungry.
• We ate everything because we were hungry, although the food was horrible.
• The food was horrible. However, we ate everything because we were hungry.
